Energy management
ISO 50001: energy management
Measure energy. Improve it. Prove it.
ISO 50001 is the energy management system standard. It gives you a structured way to understand where energy is used, set a baseline and indicators, and improve energy performance continually. Many organisations use it to find and act on savings, support sustainability reporting and meet customer or group requirements. The results depend on your operations and on what you act on.
What the standard asks for
- An energy review that identifies significant energy uses
- An energy baseline and energy performance indicators
- Objectives and action plans for improving energy performance
- Energy performance considered in design and purchasing decisions
- Monitoring, internal audit and management review
When it usually comes up
Rising energy cost, sustainability reporting, or customer and group requirements for energy performance.
Good to know
- ISO 50001 is an ISO standard, not an ISO/IEC one. It follows the same high-level structure as the other three, so it can sit in one system next to ISO/IEC 27001.
- Measurement is central to it, so the work starts with what you can already meter and record.

Often built together with
The ISO management system standards share one structure, so what you build for ISO 50001 is reused when you add another.
